Anne of Green Gables, by L.M. Montgomery, is an enchanting and enthralling realistic fiction about an orphaned girl, Anne Shirley, as she arrives and grows accustomed to her new lodgings in a snug white farmhouse next to a brook called Green Gables. Her new guardians, Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert, are amazed by her relentless positivity and unorthodox imaginings and they both agree that she is a very unusual child. The story is based on Prince Edward Island, Canada, in the 1870s which leads to quaint and charming imagery throughout the story. Vocabulary can sometimes be difficult but based on the context it is generally easy to pick out the meanings of the words. It is a very lighthearted and innocent book but it has some dark moments, for example, the death of someone close to Anne. Because of the length of the book and the vocabulary, I would recommend it to readers 10 years and older. This book can be described as no less than a beautiful, timeless classic. Go read it!! (Anna.
