The book follows a young boy named Alfie who lived during the Viking era and who happened to come across a special artifact together with his mother which caused both of them to stop ageing completely.

The book goes over how they adapted to different lifestyles and eras until they eventually reach the 20th century where Alfie and his mother are now over 1000 years old but stuck in the bodies that they had when the consumed to artifact.

Alfie and his mother have settled into a small cabin in the woods close to a neighborhood where they try to remain as remote from other humans as possible since if someone were to figure out that they were immortal it would be detrimental for them.

However, one day a massive fire starts which leads to Alfie's mother dying and their home being burnt, Alfie meets up with two other kids his age named Aiden and Roxy and together they go on an adventure to find a way to break the spell that Alfie is under so that he may live a normal life together with his new friends. The astonishing, beautiful new story for all readers of 10 and over from the bestselling and Costa-shortlisted author of TIME TRAVELLING WITH A HAMSTER.

There are stories about people who want to live forever.

This is not one of those stories.

This is a story about someone who wants to stop…

Alfie Monk is like any other nearly teenage boy – except he’s 1,000 years old and can remember the last Viking invasion of England.

obviously no one believes him.

So when everything Alfie knows and loves is destroyed in a fire, and the modern world comes crashing in, Alfie embarks on a mission to find friendship, acceptance, and a different way to live…

which means finding a way to make sure he will eventually die.

Obviously no one believes him. (Alex. Grade 7)
