Scarlet and Ivy, The Curse in the Candlelight by Sophie Cleverly starts with everything afresh and new, with new students and a new term as well. Scarlet and Ivy had two new girls this year in their class, one of them whom Ariadne was bullied by from her last school and the other what people assume is a witch. Muriel Witherspoon made Ariadne believe that she has turned into a new leaf, and Ebony McCloud proved herself to be a witch, are all of these statements true? This book contained many ups and downs throughout the entire story, and some of the information inside really surprised me. I would recommend this book towards ages 9-11, as I felt like it was targeted towards those ages and also towards people who like the genre of mystery, adventure and non-fiction. (Ellery. Grade 7)

"The Curse in the Candlelight" by Sophie Cleverly is the 5th book in the series "Scarlet and Ivy". In this book, the twins start a new term at Rookwood School, with new teachers, new students and new adventures. One of the new students, Ebony McCloud, soon starts to act weird, she keeps causing trouble and playing tricks but somehow does not seem to get in any trouble. Rumour has it, she is a witch and things only get weirder. To add to the confusion, another new student arrives, Muriel Witherspoon, a girl who bullied Ariadne (the twins' friend) at her previous school. Muriel is trying to win Ariadne's trust, convincing her that her old ways are over, but are they? And what does Ebony's strange behavior have to do with this? I really liked this book as the plot completely turned around throughout the story. It fits in the genres mystery, adventure and realistic fiction. I would recommend this novel for ages nine that can start to read chapter books. (Nina. Grade 7)

Scarlet & Ivy The Curse in the Candlelight is the 5th book of the series. I enjoyed this mystery book because the vocabulary was not hard. I would like to note that for an audience who is sensitive when it comes to witchcraft, you might not enjoy this book too much. And now, about the book: A new year at Rookwood... New students... Some normal some strange... Some with a dark history... As a new year at Rookwood school begins, the twins and Ariadne are hoping this year will be a fresh start. But will it? (Malena. Grade 8)

The Curse in the Candlelight by Sophie Cleverly is the 5th book in the realistic fiction series of Scarlet and Ivy. The girls are starting a whole new year at Rookwood. With different teachers, different students, and a more positive headmistress, this could be a brand new start for them. But something about one of the new girls doesn't seem right. The teachers seem to turn a blind eye whenever she causes trouble, and shes been playing tricks. Rumors fly around the school...Is she a witch? Another unexpected new student arrives. Muriel Witherspoon was known by Ariadne before Rookwood, as she was the bully in Ariadne's last school. But Muriel seem like a totally different person. She seems kind, and shy. Has she really turned over a new leaf? I enjoyed this book because of the plot twist experienced at the end. I would recommend this book to people who like mysterious fiction stories, with plot twists and character personality changes. (Justine. Grade 8)
