The City of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau is a realistic fiction novel. The main charaters are Lina Mayfleet and Doon Harrow. On the day the kids pick their jobs (at the age of 12) Lina picks Pipeworks, the worst job there is. This job is underground, fixing the pipes of Ember. But Doon Harrow, (an old childhood friend who Lina hasn't spoken to in years,) offers to trade for his job, Messenger. They live in a world where it is constantly dark. The city used to have supplies of light bulbs, canned food, and materials to live, but rumors are saying that these supplies are running low... No one has ever found a way out of Ember. If there even is a way out... I did not like this book since I think the plot took very long to start. I think that the idea and concept of this book is quite interesting, but I did not like how the book was written. I would not particularly recommend this book, unless you would like a very slow and easy to read book. (Justine. Grade 8)

"The City Of Ember" by Jeanne DuPrau is about a city with the electricity powered by one object. The city of Ember is slowly dying, as they have frequent black-outs and is low on supplies. At the right time, Lina and Doon found a paper with instructions that will lead them towards another city. This book would fit best into the genre adventure and mystery, as they go through an adventure with many mysteries. I would recommend this book to people who enjoy solving puzzles and going through and adventure, this book fits with the age lower than 10 as I didn't think it was appropriate for ages higher. City of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau is about a world that relies on one generator. It pumps their water, gives them light, and powers the entire city. Without it, there would be nothing but blackness. The mayor keeps assuring the city that everything is fine, but young Lina Mayfleet and Doon Harrow are aware that resources are running low and that the generator has been causing problems. But where should Lina and Doon start? More frequent power outs... They last longer... Resources are running out... Will Lina and Doon have enough time to figure it out? I think this book was pretty creative, and I quite liked it. I think the vocabulary was pretty easy. I recommend this book for people who want something not too challenging. (Malena. Grade 8)

The book, The City of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau is a mixture of science fiction and fantasy. It is about a girl named Lina and a boy named Doon who live in a city being threatened by frequent blackouts and low supplies. There isn't much time before the lights start flickering and Lina and Doon have to find a way to save the city before it’s too late. In the beginning, it was kind of boring but as I kept reading, I really enjoyed it as it was so suspenseful and exciting. There was a very interesting twist at the end but I won’t spoil it. What I liked most was that it was told from two different perspectives and that added another element of interest. Overall, I would recommend this book to people who like extremely suspenseful stories that are a mix of science fiction and fantasy. (Seoyeon. Grade 7)

The book CIty of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau is an exciting mysterious adventure about the two main characters, Lina and Doon. It is about a city called Ember whose supplies are running low and terrifying blackouts are happening. Ember has limited time until all lights go out and never to come back again. Lina finds a part of a secret message and she and Doon explore forgotten parts of the city. I liked this book because it is a lot about adventure and mystery. At the beginning of the book it is a bit boring but as soon as you get to the middle and end it is more exciting and fun. I recommend this book to people who like mystery or adventure themed books because Jeanne’s book includes little puzzles and is very unique. If you do like this book, there are more books that follow the same story which is really nice to have. (Rachel. Grade 8)

I read the ‘City of Ember’ by Jeanne DuPrau. The genre of the book is science fiction and fantasy. I really enjoyed this book because the storyline was very interesting and unique. I have never read a book with this kind of story. I really liked the setting of this book. It is a place that has no light during the night so the characters can’t see. The characters have no idea what time of day it is which makes the story incredibly interesting. The vocabulary wasn't hard so I gave it a rating of 2. I would recommend this book to people who like fantasy and because it is a series, readers can continue to enjoy the story even further. (Sebin. Grade 8)
