I'm a Study Skills Lecturer on Higher Education programmes in the UK. I have worked on EAP partnerships in China, Thailand, and Greece, as well as a range of global intercultural communication programmes.
I started my career as a publisher of books and digital materials for well-known publishers and awarding bodies, and transitioned into business, EAP, and study skills training. My research interests include teacher training, learning in the Metaverse, and intercultural communication.
Why did you join the TEd in EAP SIG?
I joined during the Pandemic because I was working online at home and feeling a little isolated. Being part of the SIG has given me access to a professional network, new ideas and opportunities to present, which I have really enjoyed.
What is your most memorable SIG experience?
Probably going to a conference in Crete in 2022 with Angeliki Apostolidou to present on behalf of the SIG. My first teaching job was in Crete a hundred years ago, in 1991, so it was a fantastic opportunity to visit some old haunts, enjoy the weather and combine work and pleasure.
What teaching ‘trick’ can you share with us?
Music! I play it before my sessions and during some activities, and it transforms the mood of the room. I always ask students for recommendations, which gives them control over an aspect of the class, and they teach me about different modern music styles.
What part of the SIG/your work for the SIG do you enjoy most?
I loved putting processes and templates in place when the SIG started. I have a project management background, so setting up the systems and tools was right up my street. I also fancy myself as an amateur designer, so doing the flyers and posters has been a joy. I also enjoy working with a team who are working voluntarily, which makes the vibe very relaxed, free and open.
