I have been teaching English for over 10 years. I have taught in Italy, Spain, Poland, and Japan before returning to Glasgow to obtain my MEd in TESOL. This marks a move from General English Language to more EAP teaching. For the past 5 years, I have taught term-time in Glasgow International College and summers on the Edinburgh Pre-Sessional. I have delivered CPDs on peer observation and practitioners’ beliefs on CPD, and I was part of BALEAP’s working group that developed the Vision and Values in Practice of the organisation. My main interests within the field are multilingualism, translanguaging, and student voice.
Currently, I am an EAP Teaching Fellow at the University of Edinburgh. I primarily work with the students on the International Foundation Programme during term-time and with the Pre-Sessional students during the summer.
Why did you join the TEd in EAP SIG?
I’ve attended their events over the past few years and I’ve always enjoyed them and come away feeling more confident in my day-to-day teaching practice, so to be in a position to support this group that could make other educators feel that way was an easy decision.
What tips can you give to people who want to join or start their own SIG?
Firstly, attend a variety of them to see which one or two strike a chord with you. We are fortunate in BALEAP to have a rich selection of SIGs, so attend as many as you can. If you feel your particular interest is not represented in the SIGs, then that would be your chance to begin. Maybe speak to other people who have started SIGs and take advice from them.
How did you start your career in EAP?
Like most of us, I started in TEFL/General English language education before moving into EAP. During my Masters, I took a TEAP module and the following summer I was employed on the Edinburgh pre-sessional, and since then I have mainly taught in EAP, but still enjoy TEFL opportunities when they arise as I feel the two areas provide me with a more comprehensive teaching approach.
What are you looking forward to next year?
Obviously, all the interesting events from the TEd SIG. You’re in for a treat! Besides that, I’m hoping to submit my RAPP for TEAP accreditation and continue with my professional development. Also, meeting a whole new class of students and working with them to reach their goals.
