The heart of Team BYC is our Learn to Sail Program—where every great sailor begins!
Level 1 is all about getting comfortable on the water, learning the basics, and discovering the fun of sailing solo.
Level 2 builds confidence and control, helping sailors fine-tune their skills, understand the wind, and start learning how to sail with purpose.
Level 3 brings it all together with racing principles and strategy, preparing sailors to take the exciting next step—joining the Race Team!
Teen Sailing was created for older Learn to Sail sailors and provides a fun and social environment while still teaching the skills from Level 1, 2, & 3.
Sabot vs Opti: Where to start after Learn to Sail?
Sabots are the traditional Southern California training boat and are perfect for young sailors who want to build strong fundamentals in a stable, forgiving design. The flat hull makes it easy to balance, tack, and control—ideal for learning precision and boat handling. Many local regattas feature Sabots, creating a strong community and fun, friendly competition right here at BYC and neighboring clubs. Sabots are the perfect class for families to ease into regatta and racing team logistics!
Optimists are the most popular youth boat in the world and are a great choice for sailors eager to experience larger fleets and national-level racing. The Opti’s rounded hull and sensitive steering challenge sailors to refine balance and trim while adapting to wind shifts. It’s a fantastic step for sailors aiming to compete regionally or internationally.
So where do you start?
Both classes teach independence, confidence, and seamanship. If your sailor thrives on local camaraderie and steady progression, the Sabot might be the perfect fit. If they’re eager to chase competition and explore sailing beyond Southern California, the Optimist is a great path forward.
