Coach Gerry Weisgerber announced retirement from coaching basketball at the high school level on Tuesday, Feb. 2, during an interview with Rick Cassano. Weisgerber has had two different tenures at Badin High School, the first from 1981-1999 and had a record 272-141. During that time, the Rams brought home a state championship going 28-0 in 1987-88. When Weisgerber returned in March of 2016, the Rams were 9-15 overall. Weisgerber’s overall record at Badin is 337-192 heading into the last game of the regular season against Kettering Alter. When Weisgerber returned in 2016, the two seasons prior he spent being an assistant coach for Matt Thompson.
Thompson is grateful for the time he got to spend with Coach Weisgerber as a player and as a coaching tandem.
“First, I'm thankful that I played in the era that I did, with the teammates and coaches I had. Coach Weisgerber was a teacher of basketball and of life. He knew when we needed motivation and when we needed help. He taught me that I represent something larger than myself and that my players were always watching my reaction to a situation. I'm a better person, professional and coach because of Coach Weisgerber and I hope I've had at least half the positive influence on my past players that he had on me,” Thompson said.
Geoff Melzer, as well as the whole Badin community is extremely grateful for all the memories created with Coach Weisgerber.
“Coach Weisgerber exemplifies what a coach should be, great knowledge of the game, not only teaches the game but lessons that will last a lifetime loves his players both current and former and would do anything for his players, staff, and the school,” Melzer said.
All of the Badin community is grateful for the memories made with Coach Weisgerber and can’t wait to keep making more memories for the remainder of the season.
