Flub’s Dari-ette in Hamilton closed on Oct. 1. The Hamilton location was the last to close out of Flub’s other two locations in Fairfield and Ross. With cyclones, shakes, cones and much more— Flub’s is a hometown classic loved by many.
Emily Sauer is a senior here at Badin and is also an employee for Flub’s. Sauer has worked there for about a season and a half.
“I love my co-workers and bosses. I genuinely enjoy working at Flub’s, it doesn’t feel like work when you’re having fun. It’s awesome because my co-workers either go to Badin or are around my age,” Sauer said.
Frequent customers aren’t the only people who miss Flub’s in the off season, but the employees do too.
“I miss the ice cream, of course, but I also miss the atmosphere and adrenaline rushes you get from trying to make four cyclones and five cones at once,” Sauer said.
Closing night brings a lot of business to Flub’s, everyone wants ice cream one more time until the next season.
“It’s pretty crazy working closing nights every year. It’s crazy how may people come and enjoy a treat with their family and friends. It’s always our busiest night of the year, and all of us are working hard to provide a quick and friendly service,” freshman Liam Connaughton said.
Flub’s has been owned by the Connaughton family for over fifty years, with everyone involved.
“I have been working at Flub’s all summer this year and most of the summer last year, but I’ve been helping out probably close to five years,” Connaughton said.
Even though Flub’s closed on Oct. 1, the closing process doesn’t end there.
“When we close each year, we completely clean the store inside and out. Even with some of our staff helping us, it takes almost two weeks to clean out the store top to bottom,” Connaughton said.
Flub’s can be a place for people to socialize and have a good time while enjoying an ice cream treat.
“I think some of my favorite memories from this year were getting close to everybody else who works there. It’s also great to work at Flub’s because you get to know some of the people who come in. Some of our customers come in multiple times per week, and getting to know them is a great experience,” Connaughton said.
Whether people go to Flub’s for a peanut butter cup cyclone or a refreshing sherbet, it will be missed this winter by many.
