Freelance Editing Services

I am a professional editor as well as an author. I am a content and developmental editor for a small publisher named Champagne Book Group. As a writer and editor for a publisher, I know how hard it is to find affordable professional editing whether you are in the beginning stages as a writer or have published many books. My hope is to help writers go from draft to polished, and ready to query or self publish. Keep in mind, if you head the traditional publishing route, you will eventually work with an in house editor and change things to fit the house's style, but my editing will help clean up your manuscript to help get those requests from agents and publishing houses.

With all professional editing, I always recommend, before you pay for services, you edit and proofread as much as you can by yourself or with a critique partner.

I accept most genres of YA, NA, or Adult fiction. However my preferences lie in all subgenres of fantasy, romance, new adult, or historical. Some light sci-fi( dystopian, near future, etc.), women's fiction, contemporary, thriller, or crime/mystery is always welcome too. All levels of heat are accepted.

Not a good fit for: nonfiction, true genre horror (but love dark!), hard sci-fi (think space opera), misogynistic themes (unless genuinely trying to gain women readers and need help with characterization), inspirational or religious themes, and on screen rape or non-consensual sex.

How:

  • I use track changes on Microsoft Word or Apple Pages, whichever works better for you. Depending on the project, Google Docs can be used for smaller projects, but I find it to be not as user friendly.
  • I use the Chicago Style Manual for editing references or refer to my publishing house's style guide if not found in there.
  • I will never share, distribute, or let others view your work. You retain all rights. Titles, blurbs, etc. will be confidential until you give me the green light to share your book on my site or social media.
  • Payment plans are available upon request.
  • Discounts for referrals or returning customers are available.

*As I'm a newer editor, my prices are far below industry standards until I grow a client list*

*If you plan to sub to my publishing house, please do so via traditional query before requesting services to avoid a conflict of interest.*

Services:

Manuscript Evaluation:

  • TIME FRAME: 2 week turn around for most novels (50-80k words) but subject to increase depending on word count.
  • WHAT: I'll read the whole manuscript and you will receive a 2-page minimum report in the style of an editorial letter discussing characterization (motivation and development), setting/world building, pace, plot structure, overall critique, point out any blaring writing/mechanical issues and any concerns and possible solutions and next steps.
  • TIPS: This is not an annotated manuscript. You would ideally use this before sending it to beta readers or for a developmental edit. This is a way to figure out "is this working?" Maybe you need some major rewrites still. This is sometimes referred to as an 'alpha' read. Ideally the author would take my feedback, incorporate what they wish, then send to beta readers or critique partners to see if the updated plot twists or character development is landing with readers or pay for a developmental edit.
  • PRICING: .0019/word (60K would be $114) half due at time of booking and second half due at the end of the project.

Query/Submission Package:

  • TIME FRAME: 1 week or sooner
  • WHAT: you will receive a line edit/annotation of your query letter, first 5 pages, and synopsis. A second round of general feedback will be offered after you've made revisions.
  • TIPS: This is for someone who has a polished manuscript they're eager to enter into contests, query to agents or publishing houses, or pitch at conferences.
  • PRICING: Flat $55 fee (half due at time of booking and second half at the end of the project.)

Developmental Edit:

  • TIME FRAME: ~4 weeks for every 60K words.
  • WHAT: Send a 1000 word count page sample and I will send it back to you to see if you like my style of editing. I will also be able to give you a quote based on the sample.
    • You will receive a line by line edit of your manuscript with track changes. Furthermore, each chapter will have a report comment at the end, and you will receive an editorial letter of what I focused on and why and which direction I suggest you head. A second pass of light line edits can be added after you've made revisions for a lower fee.
    • This will focus on the development of the story, but I can't ignore style, so I usually add some line edits as well. Developmental edits include bigger picture ideas, world building, plot structure, characterization, suggest chapters or scenes to cut, add, or rearrange, and discuss emotional connection. The will still include some light style and syntax suggestions, address/fix repetition and overused words or phrases with a highlight, I will rework and reword some sentences or paragraphs, fix punctuation, grammar, and spelling as needed, however, this is the focus of a a true line edit.

*Note: some editors offer line or development, an either or, but I personally cannot look at development without touching on some line edits so I like to do the two together.*

  • TIPS: This is for someone who has hopefully self-edited once and had a critique partner and there were some things readers questioned and it isn't polished and ready to query. Maybe you need someone with fresh eyes. There are perhaps some issues or plot holes you cannot fix on your own or areas where you could world build and immerse readers more and just need a little guidance.
  • PRICING: varies depending on the level of work required from the sample pages. For development, I need the whole manuscript. Runs between .007-.010/word (60k would run between $420-600)

Line Edit:

  • TIME FRAME: ~5 weeks for every 60K words for the first pass. If you pay for a second pass, it usually takes a 2-4 weeks.
  • WHAT: Send a 1000 word count page sample and I will send it back to you to see if you like my style of editing. I will also be able to give you a quote based on the sample.
    • You will receive a line by line, annotated edit of your manuscript with track changes.
    • This will focus on language and style. I will help you show more versus tell. While maintaining your voice, I will give syntax suggestions, address/fix repetition and overused words or phrases, rework and reword sentences or paragraphs, fix punctuation, grammar, and spelling. I will point out blaring plot hole issues or radical character issues, but that is more of developmental edit.
    • Big difference between developmental and line edit: A line edit is stylization and showing. A developmental is the arc of the story. A line edit checks for clarity, language, and conciseness. A line edit is micro focused on each sentence and a developmental edit is more macro on larger picture.
  • TIPS: This is for someone who has hopefully plotted and executed the development of the story, maybe had some beta readers or a critique partner and the story is landing well, but you need help with the style, language, and showing of the story.
  • PRICING: varies depending on the level of work required from the sample pages. You can break this down by chunks, chapters, or the whole manuscript. Runs between .007-.010/work (60k would run between $420-600)

Second Passes:

An addition of a second pass is negotiable. If you pay for a line edit, and you need to make substantial changes, I'd recommend a second pass. It could be the first three chapter or the whole MS. We can work something out that fits both you budget and needs.

Proofreading:

  • TIME FRAME: ~3 weeks for every 60K words. Only one pass.
  • WHAT: Send a 500 word count page sample and I will send it back to you to see if you like my style of editing. I will also be able to give you a quote based on the sample. After submitting, you will receive an annotated edit of your manuscript with track changes.
    • Big difference between line edit and proofreading: A line edit is for grammar but also style and clarity. Proofreading is the from the largest macro lens and should be the final set of eyes on it to check for any last grammar mechanics issues missed in editing or in changes made from revisions. A proofread is recommended after a line and developmental edit has occurred. In this pass, I note if a sentence is correct not if it is stylish and could be better, that should be done already.
  • TIPS: This is the last step before publication.
  • PRICING: varies depending on the level of work required from the sample pages, ranges from .0025-.00.006/word (60k would run between $150-180)

Testimonials:

  • "JM gave very thorough feedback on my first chapter. I really appreciated how she touched on “smaller” issues like word choice or sentence structure as well as more overarching concepts like characterization and plotting. Her notes pointed out several things that my critique partners hadn’t caught (like some pesky word repetitions). Her feedback was so helpful in putting the polishing touches on my writing." -@jennabigelow_
