Frequently Asked Questions

Welcome to our FAQ page!

We've included some of the questions we receive each year below, but if you have question or concern about the music classes at YMLA, please send us a message via our Contact page. We'll be more than happy to answer any questions you have!

Q: How much does it cost to be in the Dragon Music Program?

A: There are a few costs associated with the Music Program, but please understand that we have options available for families who need financial support. No students will be turned away from the music program due to financial concerns. Please also note that we hold fundraisers twice a year (fall & spring) so that students can raise money for program shirts, trips, and other related expenses. Here is a quick breakdown of the most common costs:

  • Instrument Rental/Purchase – We provide instruments for all YMLA music students free of charge. Students are also welcome to rent or buy an instrument on their own, if they wish. There are required supplies for each instrument (cleaning & maintenance). If you are curious, you can take a sneak peek at these lists on the Current Students page. If you are new to the music program, please do not buy any instrument-specific supplies yet.

  • Class Supplies – Students are required to have a few school supply items (like a binder, pencils, etc.). These items are listed on our School Supply list that is on the Current Students page.

  • Program T-Shirt – Each music group has its own custom t-shirt, which we order at the start of the year. Shirts usually cost about $10. Don’t forget, we do have fundraisers during the year that can help cover this cost.

  • Trips, Parties, Etc. – We have events throughout the year such as concerts, trips, parties, etc. Our goal is to raise enough money through fundraisers to cover any associated costs (pizza dinners, trips, etc.).

Q: What if I want to play sports? Can I be in Athletics and be in the Dragon Music Program?

A: ABSOLUTELY! Most of our music students play at least one or two sports during the year (including football!). We have a great relationship with our Athletics Department and believe in encouraging students to explore all the opportunities available at GGYMLA.

Q: How do I pick my instrument?

A: First, CLICK HERE to view our Beginner Music Website. There are videos about all the different instruments (except guitar) that you can use to learn about the choices available.

Next, take about 20 minutes to try the “Instrument Matching Tool.” After completing the Listening Challenge and answering the questions, you’ll be able to tell us your top three choices for your instrument. Remember to tell us in the comments box on the tool if you are wanting to play Guitar!

When we come back to school, we’ll be able to let you try out the instruments that you’re interested in and make sure you get into the correct Beginner Music class.

Q: Does it take a lot of time to learn an instrument?

A: Sort of… The more time that students spend practicing their instruments, the faster they will progress with their skills. This is why we require at least 20 minutes of daily practice at home. Practicing consistently builds healthy, strong muscles and musical habits. Students who go beyond that recommendation progress faster and will notice themselves improving more quickly than their classmates. Basically, the more you put in, the more you'll get out of the experience!

Q: What makes a great music student?

A: Students who love music, are willing to work through challenges and who want to improve make the best music students.

Mrs. Smith and Mr. Wright have been teaching for quite awhile and can confidently say that ANYONE can learn to love making music through being in the music program.

Those who keep working and trying everyday, even if things get tough are the ones who become the leaders of the our ensembles. Don’t worry if you think it might be hard… Mrs. Smith and Mr. Wright will be there to help you out along with all the returning music students who have been in your shoes before!
