Students will begin unit 6: Division Models
Division problems may be represented in a variety of ways. In this unit, third graders will need to interpret the dividend as an amount that can be partitioned into equal shares. Students then determine the quotient as they find the number of equal groups or the number of objects in each group. Students’ understanding of combining equal groups of objects as multiplication will support their understanding of division as separating equal groups. Students learn different strategies and models to gain a conceptual understanding of division, providing an opportunity for them to describe a context in which division would be useful. Students can think of division as an unknown factor problem within a given context. Students build on their knowledge of multiplication by exploring the relationship between multiplication and division through related models and equations with a symbol standing for the unknown. Students also determine and explain whether a whole number is even or odd using the divisibility rule for 2.
Take-Home Letter provided by STEMScopes.
