State Job Title: Accounting Technician I
The Office of Capital and Forensic Writs (OCFW) seeks a bright, motivated Accounting Assistant Apprentice with OCFW finance and operations in support of the office’s important mission. We are the post-conviction public defender for the State of Texas and serve to protect the integrity of the criminal legal system to ensure that convictions and sentences are constitutional, reliable, and untainted by questionable forensic science.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
The OCFW Accounting Technician is a part-time position and the person selected will perform entry-level administrative and technical assistance work. Primarily, he or she will perform entry level work in the Finance Department, most of which will be accounts payable. Specific duties include: receiving and logging invoices, maintaining, and updating the accounts payable log, making timely vendor payments, and assist in researching ways to save money. Additional areas may include bookkeeping, travel reimbursements, inventory control, purchasing, checking documents for accuracy, copying/filing documents, maintaining files, opening agency mail, and accepting packages for the department. He or she will work under close supervision but will have opportunities to use their initiative and independent judgment.
This is an excellent opportunity for persons interested in gaining state accounting experience and furthering the work of the Office of Capital and Forensic Writs. While working in this position, your time will count toward state retirement. If you choose to work 20 hours per week, you are eligible for state benefits, including state medical insurance; 50% of medical insurance cost will be cover by state.
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:
Assists with accounts payable (75%): receiving and logging invoices, maintaining, and updating an accounts payable log, making timely vendor payments, researching ways to save money.
Assist with reviewing and processing travel reimbursements.
Assists with maintaining files and records.
Files and maintains supplies, forms, records, and reports.
Assist in conducting physical inventory.
Assist with auditing reports, vouchers, invoices, statements.
Opens and distributes incoming mail and prepares outgoing mail.
May deliver, pick up, or receive documents, supplies, equipment, or materials; check for quantity and quality; or make arrangements for repairs and services.
Performs related work as assigned.
GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS:
This is an excellent opportunity for applicants who seeking to gain Accounting experience. The ideal candidate will have general familiarity with clerical operations and has completed or is enrolled in accounting/finance courses.
Applicants should be enrolled at an institution of higher learning in an undergraduate business, public administration, human resources program, or related to accounting program. Familiarity with clerical operations. Graduation from a standard senior high school or equivalent supplemented by courses in accounting is generally preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Skill in using computers and accounting and/or human resources related software applications, database entry/management.
Ability to handling multiple tasks and prioritizing.
Ability to communicate effectively in a professional environment. Knowledge of office procedures and of spelling, grammar, punctuation, and arithmetic.
Ability to accurately perform detailed numerical work, prepare and maintain records, files, and reports.
Attention to detail, organization, and accuracy.

Apprenticeship Description:
This is an entry-level, part-time position. During the Apprenticeship, the candidate will be part of the On-the-Job Training and ACC coursework Bookkeeping level 1 certificate track. The candidate is expected to attend at least two semesters of courses while working for the employer. Upon completion of apprenticeship (OJT training) and Bookkeeper Level 1 credential completion, the Apprentice will be eligible to apply for an advanced position within the company.
Apprenticeship Program Requirements:
The candidate must be enrolled in the Accounting Technician certificate program at Austin Community College. The applicant must complete/or be enrolled in the minimum of the pre-Apprenticeship courses (Intro to Account I and II, Computer Apps, and Keyboarding) when applying for this Bookkeeping Apprenticeship.

What is Registered Apprenticeship?
Registered Apprenticeship is a work-based training model that combines paid On-the-Job Training (OJT) with Related Technical - or “classroom” - Instruction (RTI). Both elements of the program are completed at the same time.
Apprenticeship is a great tool for identifying and rewarding high-performing employees and moving them up a career ladder. What are my obligations as an Apprentice?
As stated, apprenticeship is a model of training that allows individuals to work and attend training at the same time. Since apprentices are paid staff, they first and foremost must demonstrate professional behavior and maintain eligibility for employment at all times.
As part of the apprenticeship agreement, apprentices will also be responsible for completing coursework according to the agreed upon schedule.
The goal of the program is for all apprentices to become skilled as Bookkeepers.
