Bless Everything

In the name of the Father

Breaths

Adapted from a poem by Birago Diop

Music by Ysaye M. Barnwell

Listen more often to things than to beings.

Listen more often to things than to beings.

‘Tis the ancestors breath

When the fire’s voice is heard

‘Tis the ancestors breath

In the voice of the waters

Those who have died have never, never left

The dead are not under the earth.

They are in the rustling trees.

They are in the groaning woods.

They are in the crying grass.

They are in the moaning rocks.

The dead are not under the earth.

Those who have died have never, never left

The dead have a pact with the living.

They are in the woman’s breast.

They are in the wailing child.

They are with us in the home.

They are with us in the crowd.

The dead have a pact with the living.

TaReKiTa

Lyrics & Music:  Reena Esmail

TaReKiTa is a vibrant joyful piece in a rāga (an Indian classical melodic framework) called “Jog”, which incorporates both major and minor modalities into a single scale. The text syllables are onomatopoeic vocalizations of the sounds produced by Indian instruments.

The Prow

From The Ocean Between Us

Poetry by Jonathan Talberg from Ocean Poems

Music by Matthew Lyon Hazzard

The Prow, the best place on the boat for a seat.

Wind whipping, salt spraying, sun shining,

Dolphins playing above darkness and creeps in the deep,

Gliding o’er brilliance

Sea air, cracking of sails,

No one can catch us,

Not even the whales!

A Magical Machine

By Stephen Chapman

A spinning machine.

A magical bright machine.

Spinning and bright.

Flashing, buzzing, spinning, humming

Deep River

Traditional Spiritual

Arranged by Roy Ringwald

Deep river, my home is over Jordan

Deep river, Lord,

I want to cross over into campgroun’

Oh, don’t you want to go to that gospel feast,

That promised land where all is peace?

Deep river, Lord,

I want to cross over into campgroun’

Selene’s Boat

Text by Allison Girvan

Music by Don Macdonald

Lifting hopeful eyes to the darkening skies,

I look for signs the moon is nigh.

Finding mountain paths through the brown-skinned night,

I leave the beach so soon I might.

Reach for the moon.

Harvest the moonlight. Gather the moonlight.

And I hold lunar nectar in my trembling hand.

Shifting moonlight to pockets,

I make my way back to the strand.

Down the path once more,

Back onto the sand to where my boat is trapped on land.

Summoning the bright

Soul of satellite: “Speak to the sea! Call in the tide!”

Guided by moon. Counselled by moon.

Lead by the moonlight. Governed by moonlight.

And I empty my pockets onto the shore,

And the water floods in, where only sand was there before.

There was a Time

Poetry by William Wordsworth

Music by Elaine Hagenberg

There was a time when meadow, grove, and stream,

The earth, and every common sight,

To me did seem

Apparell'd in celestial light,

The glory of a dream.

The rainbow comes and goes,

And lovely is the rose;

The moon doth with delight

Look round her when the heavens are bare;

Waters on a starry night

Are beautiful and fair;

The sunshine is a glorious birth;

But yet I know, where'er I go,

That there hath pass'd away a glory from the earth.

Though nothing can bring back the hour

Of splendour in the grass, of glory in the flower;

We will grieve not, rather find

Strength in what remains behind.
