From launching space explorations to delivering safe, clean water to communities, engineers find solutions to pressing problems and turn their ideas into reality. PLTW Engineering empowers students to step into the role of an engineer, adopt a problem-solving mindset, and make the leap from dreamers to doers. The program’ s courses engage students in compelling, real-world challenges that help them become better collaborators and thinkers. Students take from the courses in-demand knowledge and skills they will use in high school and for the rest of their lives, on any career path they take.

Building a Strong Foundation for College and Career

Each PLTW Engineering course engages students in interdisciplinary activities like working with a client to design a home, programming electronic devices or robotic arms, or exploring algae as a biofuel source. These activities not only build knowledge and skills in engineering, but also empower students to develop essential skills such as problem solving, critical and creative thinking, communication, collaboration, and perseverance.

Engineering and Design Industry Sector Pathways

The Engineering and Design Industry Sector Pathways provides a strong foundation in engineering and design. The students are engaged in an instructional program that integrates academic and technical preparation and focuses on career awareness, career exploration, and career preparation. The demand for engineers in a variety of specializations throughout the state and the nation will remain high. The pathways in this sector emphasize real-world, occupationally relevant experiences of significant scope and depth. To prepare students for continued training, advanced educational opportunities, and direct entry to a career, the engineering and design programs offer the following components: classroom, laboratory, and hands-on contextual learning; project-based and work-based instruction; work experience education; and leadership and interpersonal skills development.

Engineering Design Pathway

The Engineering Design Pathway is a sequence of courses, which follows a proven hands-on, real-world problem solving approach to learning. Students learn and apply the design process, acquire strong teamwork and communication proficiency and develop organizational, critical-thinking, and problem-solving skills. The

Engineering Design Pathway provides learning opportunities for students interested in preparing for careers in the design, production, and maintenance of mechanical, telecommunications, electrical, electronics, and electromechanical products and systems.

Students dig deep into the engineering design process, applying math, science, and engineering standards to hands-on projects like designing a new toy or improving an existing product.

Students explore a broad range of engineering topics including mechanisms, strength of structure and materials, and automation, and then they apply what they know to take on challenges like designing a self-powered car.

Students identify a real-world challenge and then research, design, and test a solution, ultimately presenting their unique solutions to a panel of engineers.

We are proud to announce that 5 PLTW Engineering students at Arcadia High School received the AP + PLTW Student Achievement from the College Board. That is 5 of the total of 402 in all of California.
