APS Teacher Leaders
Advancing Teacher Leadership in Aurora Schools
Leading Educators is a national nonprofit that partners with schools and districts to transform student outcomes by empowering teacher leaders to lead job-embedded, content-focused cycles of professional learning.
Since their launch in 2008, they have had the privilege of working with a number of districts to strategically assess and support school transformation efforts through teacher leadership. Last year, Leading Educators’ work reached over 800 teacher leaders, who led and supported about 6,500 teachers. Collectively, this group reached 180,000 students every day.
Partnership with Aurora Public Schools
Leading Educators is partnering with Aurora Public Schools to introduce Advancing Teacher Leadership in Aurora Schools (ATLAS). ATLAS has launched with a pilot cohort of 8-10 school teams.
The 2017/2018 cohort includes Arkansas Elementary, Century Elementary, Fulton Academy of Excellence, Lansing Elementary, Vaughn Elementary, Columbia Middle School, East Middle School, North Middle School, South Middle School, and Vista Peak Exploratory.
Schools were chosen based on level of readiness as evidenced from the school application, Director input, and anticipated 2017-18 instructional and leadership needs. Schools who are not chosen will be supported by the district during the 2017-18 school year in preparation for participation in the 2018-19 cohort.
School teams will participate in at least two years of programming, with gradually released support from Leading Educators to help schools build internal capacity to own the work after that.
Participating schools will select teacher leaders to lead vertical content teams in job-embedded, content-focused cycles of professional learning. Through this program, Aurora Public Schools aims to establish more formal teacher leader roles and expand teacher leaders’ capacity to support their colleagues in improving practice.
