Hi! We're Augie Acres, Augustana College's student-run garden. We hold workdays every Sunday and meetings on Mondays during the academic year!
Our Mission:
Augie Acres is Augustana College's student-run garden. The garden resides on 6th Avenue in Rock Island, IL. The club seeks to educate members on gardening practices and food-related issues, and promotes ecological citizenship, experimental thinking and community through weekly garden workdays and meetings. We are committed to growing organically without the use of agrochemicals. All of our food is distributed to the Augustana campus community or local nonprofit partners.
Our History:
Augustana Local Agricultural Society (now known as Augie Acres) was established in 2006 by students in environmental learning community classes. Their goal was to address issues such as global warming, sustainability, energy costs, and access to fresh food. In 2009, Augustana purchased what is now Augie Acres from the City of Rock Island for the price of one dollar! The garden was formerly apartment buildings, whose foundation still lies under the garden. Throughout Augie Acre's history, students have engaged in projects including campus composting, honey bees, tree plantings and the edible campus initiative. As we look to Augie Acres' future, we hope to make the garden an inclusive space for all while fulfilling our mission to educate students on issues regarding food and agriculture.
