8th Grade Language Arts
Ms. Maura Fitzgerald - Voyagers Team
Welcome to my language arts class!
I am looking forward to working with you as you continue to strengthen your vocabulary, writing, reading, and critical thinking skills - each of which plays a huge role in all subject areas, all levels of educational pursuits, and all adult activities, such as careers and parenting.
Before becoming a teacher, I spent over 20 years as a technical writer and trainer in the telecommunications industry. I specifically chose eighth grade when I was offered my position at SMS twelve years ago, and I continue to absolutely enjoy sharing my knowledge with my students as well as learning from them!
I earned my BS in Behavioral Sciences from New York Institute of Technology, earned my teaching certification from Mary Baldwin University, and have taken numerous graduate and professional development courses.
Reading has been my favorite pastime ever since I learned that the black squiggles on a page meant something. I spend most of my summers and school breaks reading. I particularly like historical fiction and non-fiction genres as well as Newbery Award adolescent literature.
The place I find most restful and restorative is the coast along the ocean from Maine to Florida, but my porch swing is a close second. I prefer living in rural areas like Augusta County even though I grew up on Long Island, New York, within 30 minutes of Manhattan. I could even see the top sections of the Twin Towers from my high school!
My husband and I live in Mount Sidney with our two Australian shepherds, Bella and Flynn (AKA Boo and Bolt). We have four grown children and six grandchildren who live in New York, Virginia, and Florida.
I believe students are best served when parents/guardians, the teacher, and the student communicate with each other. Please email me at firstname.lastname@example.org at any time. You can also reach me via the school phone (540-245-5046) during my planning period (9:15 - 10:48) or after school ( 3:15 - 3:45).
