The advantages of competing in college sports are both immediate and lifelong. Participating in college sports provides opportunities to learn, compete and succeed. Student-athletes receive top-notch academic support, quality medical care and regular access to outstanding coaching, facilities and equipment. Student-athletes as a group graduate at higher rates than their peers in the general student body and feel better prepared for life after college.
Three common college athletic programs are the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), and the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). Many colleges also offer intramural athletics that are governed by the college/university itself.
Students interested in Division I or II sports must register with the NCAA Eligibility Center. Students interested in Division III must meet the admissions standards set by the Division III school.
The NCAA is the largest college athletic program in the nation. College-bound student-athletes preparing to enroll in a Division I or Division II school are required to register with the NCAA Eligibility Center to ensure they have met amateurism standards and are academically prepared for college coursework. Students interested in a Division III school can register as well but are not required to do so.
If you register with the NCAA, you need to contact your school counselor in order to send the NCAA Eligibility Center a copy of your high school transcript.
