The 2023 Symposium Journey

Why the Tomorrow’s Leaders Annual Symposium?

The Tomorrow's Leaders (TL) students believe that they have to give back to the community that has given so much to them. We aim to develop ourselves into leaders and pioneers who can make a difference after graduation. The question here is: why do we wait until we finish our degree if we have the opportunity and the passion for making a difference before our graduation?

Hence, TL students have decided to employ what they gained from academics and leadership development activities throughout this journey for the sake of giving back to the community. Through the annual symposium, they aspire to make a tangible impact that helps community-led initiatives in the MENA region with mentorship and support from the TL experienced staff members.

The outcome of the symposium would be a full package consisting of data analytics and heavy research on the problems related to the the sustainable development goals (SDGs). The symposium is thus an initiative to suggest solutions that would develop the lives of people who should have been experiencing better living conditions.

The TL AUC successive cohorts aim to create an everlasting, sustainable event that supports, empowers, and celebrates all TL members’ journeys. Each Symposium is one step closer to forming leaders who will find creative solutions to the challenges facing their communities, the MENA region, and the world, as stated in the Tomorrow Leaders Program’s mission.

Building on the success of the 1st Annual Symposium, we worked in groups to conduct SWOT analysis and identity lessons learned and best practices to be adopted in future symposiums. To ensure effective communication, we collaborated to create a charter for the TL Annual Symposium that defines the roles and responsibilities of the stakeholders involved in the different phases of the event.

Who We Are?

The TL program is a joint effort between the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs (NEA/AC) and The American University in Cairo (AUC). In 2008, AUC welcomed its first cohort of Tomorrow’s Leaders Undergraduate scholars (TLU). The programs continue to expand across the MENA region to offer educational and leadership opportunities to outstanding youth.

As of spring 2023 , 11  cohorts have been admitted to the TL programs, with a total of 217  students (123 females and 95 males) from 16 different countries in the MENA region (158 TLU, 20 TLG and 40 TLS). Countries include Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, West Bank and Palestine, Syria, Iraq, Bahrain, UAE, Kuwait, KSA, and Yemen. 93 TLU students and 12 TLS students have already graduated from the program and 98 students are currently enrolled at AUC. What Do We Do?

The TL Symposium is a student-led initiative that aims to improve students' intellectual, personal, and civic skills through high-impact experiential and hands-on learning. It aims to enhance students' awareness of the social problems in the MENA region to achieve the objective of becoming civic-minded and gender-conscious leaders who can advocate for evidence-based public policy reforms. Each Symposium is making us one step closer to being the leaders of tomorrow and positively impacting our communities through creative solutions.

The 17 SDGs are at the heart of this year's conference, with a greater focus on climate change, diversity, equity, and inclusion. During the 3-day conference, we will bring together researchers, representatives of the government and non-profit organizations, journalists, interested in climate change governance to discuss the Sustainable Development Goals and their close connection to climate change at the global level and in the MENA region.

In this year’s event, you will enjoy networking with professors, scholars and students from the American University of Beirut (AUB) and the Lebanese American University (LAU) through  a variety of sessions; panel discussions, debates and interdisciplinary  dialogues, a walk for change, and a solutions cafe.

TL Annual Symposium Charter: Fostering Accountability and Collaboration

The TL Annual Symposium Charter 2022/2023 plays a crucial role in establishing a set of rules and guidelines for the symposium. It aims to ensure the continuous growth and sustenance of the Annual Symposium by defining the event's vision and mission, reaffirming the rights and responsibilities of all stakeholders involved, providing communication guidelines, and protecting the democratic decision-making process.

One of the key aspects highlighted in the Charter is the importance of having a committee, known as the Charter Committee, to ensure that the charter is respected throughout the symposium. The committee has an equal representation of TL students and staff, with an additional neutral member to maintain an odd number. This composition ensures impartiality and detailed knowledge of the Charter.

In brief, the Charter Committee receives and reviews reports of charter violations, conducts investigations, and takes appropriate action while maintaining confidentiality. The Charter outlines roles and responsibilities, ensuring fairness and transparency in recruitment. It promotes healthy communication, teamwork, and conflict resolution. It allows for flexibility in addressing special circumstances. The TL Annual Symposium Charter holds individuals accountable, sets the event's framework, and fosters leadership development.

Chairperson Elections

Reinforcing democracy and participation, four of us stepped forward to join the election race and nominated themselves for the TL Annual Symposium Chairperson. The four nominees presented their electoral campaigns to the rest of the TL family prior to the election day.

Simulating real-life elections, the TL family members registered to vote with their university IDs and filled out ballots and cast them in a private room. The voting process took place on a full day from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM at the TL office with a high voter turnout rate that constituted almost 90 percent of the eligible votes.

At the end of the election day, an independent committee formed of TL staff and students observed the process of counting votes to ensure transparency and fairness. The majority of the voters elected Moustafa Shehata (TLS Scholar) as the TL 2023 Annual Symposium’s Chairperson, with 35% of the total votes and only 2 percent difference with the second runner Tasnim Ebrahim Gomaa (TLU) who was appointed as the Symposium’s Vice Chairperson.

Symposium Capacity Building Training

1- Team Building:

Early in this semester, we enjoyed a team-building day with the entire TL community at AUC.We had an amazing team-building session just for us! It was all about boosting our collaboration and communication skills before we rocked the TL Annual Symposium in June 2023. We embarked on an action-packed adventure filled with exciting activities that challenged us to work together and conquer obstacles as a team. And let me tell you, it was an absolute blast! After the thrilling activities, we gathered with our awesome symposium committees. We sat down and had a chat about how to divide the workload effectively. To make it even more interesting, we discussed scenarios and learned from the experiences of previous symposium committees. It was like being in a real-life simulation! The whole point of the exercise was to kick-start the discussion within each committee and prepare ourselves for any challenges that might come our way. We put our heads together and brainstormed super cool solutions. It was such a great day and we showed off our amazing teamwork skills!

2- Presentation Design Session (May 6 at 2:30 pm Egypt time)

Let me tell you about this awesome presentation design workshop we had with Dr. Ahmed Tolba, Chair of the Management Department at AUC and TLG’s Academic Director. It was all about learning how to prepare for interviews and deliver top-notch presentations. We even had a couple of volunteers join us to deliver a mock pitch. During the session, we all came together to provide feedback and support. Everyone participated and shared their thoughts. The aim was to create a positive and engaging environment where we could really get into the mood. We covered various aspects of presentation design, from structuring our content to creating eye-catching visuals. The workshop was filled with practical tips and tricks to make our presentations shine. To make it even more exciting, we had a few brave souls step up and deliver their own mock pitches. It was a great opportunity for everyone to observe and learn from each other. We provided constructive feedback to help them improve their delivery and make their presentations even more impactful.

By the end of the workshop, we all felt more confident and ready to rock any interview or presentation that came our way. It was an empowering experience that brought us closer as a team, and we left with valuable skills and a supportive network.

It was a fantastic workshop that left us inspired and motivated. Now, we're all set to conquer the world, one presentation at a time!

3- Public Speaking Session (May 11, at 7:30 pm Egypt time)

Another incredible experience we had was at a public speaking workshop delivered by Fikry Botros, a senior instructor at the RHET & Core department at AUC. It took our presentation skills to the next level. Building upon our previous session on presentation design, this workshop delved deeper into the art of effective public speaking.

We learned the importance of thorough preparation in delivering a powerful speech. Investing time and effort in researching and organizing our content proved to be the foundation for a compelling presentation. It reminded us that success on stage begins long before we step into the spotlight. A key takeaway from the workshop was understanding our audience. Tailoring our message to resonate with the specific individuals we are addressing became a focal point. By considering their interests, needs, and values, we were able to craft speeches that truly captivated and connected with them.

By the end of the workshop, we recognized that public speaking is an art that combines technical and emotional elements. We left with a deep appreciation for the power of effective communication and the tools to engage, influence, and inspire our audience.

Thanks to this workshop, we now understand that preparation, audience analysis, voice modulation, and confident posture are all vital ingredients in delivering impactful speeches. We are eager to put these skills into practice and confidently take the stage to share our ideas with the world.

4- Press release:

Let me tell you about the fantastic press release workshop we attended! Our very own TL team member, Reem Khedr, the Communication and Outreach Senior Officer, gave us this workshop. It was all about learning what an event press release is, why we create them, how to structure them effectively, and what key elements should be included. And let me tell you, it was an incredibly fun and interactive session!

During the workshop, we delved into the purpose of an event press release. We learned that it serves as a powerful tool for spreading the word about our upcoming events, attracting media attention, and generating buzz among the public. Understanding the why behind press releases motivated us to learn how to create compelling ones.

Overall, the workshop was an exciting and dynamic learning experience. We not only gained a deeper understanding of event press releases but also had a blast while doing so. The interactive nature of the workshop made it engaging and allowed us to learn from each other's perspectives.

Armed with the knowledge and skills we acquired, we left the workshop feeling confident and prepared to create compelling event press releases. It was a valuable experience that will undoubtedly benefit us in effectively promoting our future events and capturing the attention of both the media and the public.

5- Art Workshop:

One amazing experience we had was the photography art workshop! This workshop was all about learning how to capture photos and explore different perspectives to create beautiful visual stories. And let me tell you, it was an absolute joy to wander around the breathtaking AUC gardens and capture stunning images. You will see for yourself how beautiful our campus is.

During the workshop, we learned the fundamentals of photography, from understanding composition to playing with light and shadows. We were introduced to various techniques that helped us add depth and creativity to our photos, allowing us to tell unique narratives through our lens.

One of the most exciting parts was the hands-on practice in the AUC gardens. The lush greenery, colorful flowers, and architectural wonders provided the perfect backdrop for our photography adventure. We roamed through the garden, exploring different angles, and experimenting with perspectives. It was a delightful experience to witness the beauty of nature through our camera lenses.
