The committee reached out to Nipmuc Nation to build a partnership for creating an inclusive flag. This list has examples of images that would not meet the standard for culturally sensitive materials:
Mascots
Tipis (The Nipmuc lived in a Wetu aka Wigwam)
Buffalo (This has no significance to our region)
Eagle feathers (Use turkey feathers instead)
Native Americans with weapons (This promotes the stereotype of a savage culture)
Pan-Indian headdresses - (Woodland Indians wear a specific headdress called a roach, typically smaller and made from porcupine, deer, or moose hair instead of feathers)
Indigenous women that are sexualized like Pocahontas
