The AHS Wampus Cat News recently spoke with Mrs. Pebworth about the upcoming competition at ECU, which will take place on October 25th. The high school choir is going to perform 2 pieces: Elijah Rock - A Traditional Spiritual Arranged by Victor C. Johnson, and Hope Is the Answer - Words by Bert Stratton and Music by Patti Drennan. Mrs. Pebworth states, “The steps that we are taking are primarily learning the basic fundamentals of singing as a choir. Singing as a choir is quite a bit different than singing as a soloist or even as a small group or ensemble.” She is also conducting after school rehearsals so that she can combine her two classes and to work on more confidence as the groups begin to sing together. On the topic of confidence, Mrs. Pebworth definitely has a lot in her students. "We are not 100% ready for contest yet, I would say 85%. By October 25th, we will be 125% ready. These musicians put forth great effort to achieve goals everyday and it will be amazing to hear the end result.”

The AHS choir is also attending the OSSAA contest. Choirs can receive scores from 1-5, 1 being the best and 5 being the worst. Mrs. Pebworth says, “For me, the choir going as a full group is a win enough, regardless of the rating, you have to begin somewhere.” It has been years since the choir has competed as a full choir rather than solos and ensembles.
