On February 15th, Atoka middle and high school special ed students and volunteers went to Choctaw Event Center in Durant, Ok for an art and music competition. Beforehand, fifteen students submitted numerous pieces of art for the art contest. When we arrived, the art (has a head but never weeps ) was displayed on a table; we found that there were four- 1st place, six- 2nd place, eight- 3rd place, and five- 4th place winning pieces of art from Atoka students. In the singing contest, Tommy Kelcey sang "A Sky Full of Stars" by Coldplay, and LeeAnn Whitmire sang "Old Town Road" by Lil Nas X. Both students won medals. The event began at 9:30 A.M. and ended at 12:00 P.M.
Special Olympic events/sports are a great way for the athletes to compete and enjoy themselves in activities such as cornhole, horseshoes, bowling, track and field, and art and music. "It allows them to compete and also just enjoy themselves. They give their best effort and are all winners. Everyone sees their hard work and effort, as well as getting to celebrate victories for themselves and their friends," stated special education teacher Mr. Coffey.
