Garbage Collection Report 2020

With Ateneo de Manila University’s ideals to sustainable development, the optimization and efficient use of resources is essential. Along with this is the proper management and disposal of waste products collected from the campus.

As per the guidelines mandated by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) for the collection of waste, the segregation of waste materials is required along with the proper packaging and labeling of hazardous waste. Materials Recovery Facilities (MRF) and composting facilities are around the campuses. The packing of hazardous waste in sealed and labeled drums is strictly implemented, while residual waste in tied black bags.

The Summary of Garbage Collection of Ateneo for the months of June to September, 2020 was prepared by Engr. Ronald C. Navarrete of the Central Facilities Management Office (CFMO). The garbage collection report is measured in terms of cubic meters, with each drum equivalent to 0.12869 cubic meter while black bags equal to 0.0378 cubic meters.

The report was presented by areas: Central, Ateneo Grade School Materials Recovery Facility (AGS MRF), Junior High School / Senior High School Materials Recovery Facility (JHS/SHS MRF), Residence Hall, Loyola School, and Affiliates.

From Central, 311 drums and 421 black bags were accumulated. The AGS MRF collected 263 drums and 254 black bags of garbage. JHS and SHS MRF had 90 drums and 477 black bags, while Residence Hall gathered 85 drums and 928 black bags. Loyola Schools collected 652 drums of garbage and 806 black bags. The Affiliates gathered the most number of garbage with 894 drums and 806 black bags.

The data gathered from June to September showed a decline in the number of garbage collected which may be attributed as an effect of the suspension of classes and work in the campus due to the Coronavirus 2019 pandemic. The immediate halt of the University operations caused the drop in the quantity of garbage collected.

Collected garbage in drums were noted at 1041 in June; 536 in July; 429 in August; and 289 in September. It is observed that the garbage collection decreased by almost half from June to July, and down again by half from August to September.

The data on the collected black bags in June was 2642; 1630 in July; 1630 in August; and 1358 in September. This data also illustrates the decline in garbage collection.

All in all, the Loyola Heights total collection of garbage stands at 581.18716 cubic meters with 295.34356 cum drum collection and 285.8436 black bag collection.

With the close monitoring of the Central Facilities Management Office, the strict implementation of the segregation schemes and the garbage disposal and collection of the Ateneo de Manila University’s goal of sustainable development is attainable.
