Ateneo Phases-out Use of Plastic Water Bottles on Campus


The Ateneo implements various policies on sustainability, tackling a wide range of subthemes under the cause. One of which is plastic waste reduction. The success in achieving this standard begins with their primary intention to preserve the environment, by integrating mainstream sustainable development into their overall plans. Inspired by the drive to mitigate social, environmental, and economic tension, it is the University's goal to adhere to society's ever-changing demands and actively enforce the need for sustainable solutions. From energy conservation to regulating food production to practicing ethical labor, all actions taken by the University are derived from the aim to minimize ecological damage.


The University promotes environmental awareness in all areas by spearheading lectures, seminars, workshops, and conferences on the subject. Through the guidance of the Campus Master Plan, the overall design of the institution aims to heavily incorporate nature and green spaces for all members of the community to use. Protective measures are taken when it comes to properly maintaining these areas as well. The prioritization of the usage of these spaces, in turn, increases walkability. Furthermore, the use of electric jeepneys, or e-jeeps, has been implemented within the campus as an alternative for gasoline powered vehicles. Overall, the University puts sustainability at the forefront of all campus activities.


In line with the reduction of energy and material consumption, waste management also plays an integral role in the school's day-to-day activities. These consist of water recycling, proper garbage disposal, and minimization of food wastage, to name a few. Stray animals are managed together with animal welfare groups to ensure proper care and habitat placement for these creatures. Utilities are regulated in order to conserve resources such as water, electricity, and fuel. In line with this, renewable energy sources are to be used throughout the campus as well. Materials in all areas (e.g. kitchen, lab, cleaning, and construction) should strictly be environment-friendly.


Food and beverage services must be done in accordance with the University's Health and Nutrition policies, where all food and beverage items are to be served sanitarily. The regulation of food production is also essential in minimizing wastage; this goes hand-in-hand with the rule of accurately proportioning meal servings. Food packaging must be made with eco-friendly materials and/or reusable. The use of plastic is strictly prohibited.


All these protocols are undertaken for the purpose of reducing and preparing for potential disaster risk, as they reduce carbon and water footprints. Climate change is scientifically proven to be significantly impacted by emissions made in everyday life, which is why it is important to prioritize sustainability, no matter how big or small the effect is. In partnership with other institutions such as Red Cross, Japanese institutions, and the QC Fire Department, the University develops programs that promote and adhere to Disaster Risk Reduction and Management standards.
