Minimizing Water Usage Through Less Water-Dependent Plants

The Ateneo Sustainability Guidelines encourages the university “to reduce water consumption through natural rainwater storage systems, suitable and less water-dependent plants, and water recycling programs.”

In line with considering the use of less water-dependent plants, Bougainvilleas are ideal as they do not require frequent watering. They are hardy tropical plants with green foliage all year round that are best suited for the Philippine weather due to their propensity to thrive in warmer climates.

The overall versatility of bougainvilleas makes them a very good option in Ateneo’s efforts to reduce water usage. As seen in the images featured, the Bougainvilleas are planted in different areas of the Ateneo campus.
