We were told that to go to heaven we should do good. Nowadays, how is goodness measured given the moral decline of the society that we are in?

In the Gospel, the rich young man was concerned about achieving eternal life. Jesus responded by saying, “You know the commandments”. The response was direct as if these commandments were already deeply embedded in the rich young man's very person.
Can Jesus be referring to our conscience?
