Kinkarakami is a traditional Japanese decorative wallpaper made by pressing patterns into handmade washi paper layered with tin foil, then finishing it with color and varnish.
This unique technique creates a rich, embossed texture and a subtle metallic shine found nowhere else.
Historically, Kinkarakami has been used in iconic buildings such as the Rokumeikan and the National Diet Building.
Although the technique was once lost, it has been revived and is now carefully preserved as an important cultural heritage of Japan.
In this workshop, you’ll experience part of this rare traditional process firsthand—learning about Kinkarakami while enjoying the joy of creating your own piece.
Representative of the Kinkarakami Research Institute.
