The Villas and Vista del Sol Composting Program is the first residential community composting program on ASU’s Tempe campus. The program consists of an educational component as well as a physical component. The educational component will consist of an online video demonstrating the requirements, information, and procedures regarding proper composting within the program. The physical component of the program will allow all VVDS residents to have the opportunity to check out a small composting bin from a shed located within the community upon going through an online composting education module. The program is currently in a pilot stage with plans for growth within the VVDS community as well as expansion to other ASU residential communities.
The focus of this project is providing access to composting resources and education within ASU residential communities. The program will provide physical resources and services for composting that will allow for waste to be diverted from landfill, a process that will improve ASU’s overall environmental impact. Beyond the physical resources provided, this project seeks to educate students about composting and support their development as global citizens. Through this development of residents on ASU’s Tempe campus as well as the waste diverted from landfill, this program will address many of ASU’s sustainability goals. The program will support the Personal Action, Circular Resources, Food Reconnection, and Climate Positive ASU sustainability goals. The team will seek to advance these goals through education, advocating for student interest, recognition, and behavior change.
Located on the West side of the VVDS Parking Garage. We are in the works of potentially getting a new shed for both Vista and Villas.
Program participants can check the bins out for one week at a time for composting service. There are 24 bins available for checkout each week, so sharing bins is highly encouraged! We are working to get more so everyone can compost.
