As part of our continuing effort to keep our student’s information safe, beginning spring 2021 all students will begin utilizing two-factor authentication (MFA) login designed to improve security on your accounts with the College and ASU as a whole.
What is Duo?
MFA enhances the security of your account by using a secondary device to verify your identity. This prevents anyone but the student from accessing their account, even if their password is known.
Duo is a two-factor authentication system that uses your smart device (phone or tablet) to provide a second layer of protection for your login credentials. multi-authentication is more secure than a single “advanced” password since it requires both a password and a login approval through your device.
Why Duo?
The increased security provided by Duo means reducing unauthorized access to your My ASU, ASU Gmail, Financial Aid, Canvas information, and other ASU systems associated with your ASURITE credentials. Only you can authorize logins by using the Duo app for push authentication or by setting up a security code through the Duo website or app.
Invite Period for Students
We will be inviting cohorts of students to begin enrolling in DUO. Come spring 2021, it will be a requirement for all of ASU’s students.
How does this affect classes + an Academic Integrity Notice
There may be times during class periods where students will have to authenticate to enter ASU systems. We are instructing students to enroll a second device to ensure they can always authenticate. See “Step Three: Enroll a Second Device” in the knowledge article for information on enrolling a second device. This is especially important when a student may need to authenticate in classroom situations where they may not be able to use their cell phone.
If they have their authentication device at the ready, it will take no longer than a few seconds to complete the process. After authentication is complete, they will be able to store their device for the remainder of the class session.
Additionally, there are other devices a student may use to authenticate into ASU services. They include a Smartphone and Mobile App, phone (cell phone, landline or internet-based phone), a Key Fob Hardware Token and lastly, a YubiKey Security Keys.
