Student hours are calculated by registered course credits. Each credit enrolled = 45 work hours. This course is based on total hours worked during the entire semester, not hours per week.
Please meet with your site supervisor to discuss your total required hours, your actual start and end date and to calculate the best work schedule for you to meet your required internship hours.
Use this table as a guideline when planning your schedule.
Don't forget to consider the following:
Students must meet 50% of their hours on or before the midterm evaluation submission date and 100% of their hours by the end of the semesters.
Time used for lunch breaks cannot be reported as work time on a student’s timesheet, unless the lunch is a “working lunch” (i.e., lunch eaten during a business meeting, training, or at a conference where information is presented, shared, or discussed as a component of the internship).
Students cannot report travel time to and from their internship site on their Timesheet. However, students MAY include travel time on their Timesheet if the travel takes place after they arrive at work, and they are required to report to a second destination for their work before the end of their shift. Travel time for business conducted out-of-town (such as an airplane travel or extended car ride) also may not be included on the Timesheet.
Students must obtain written permission from their CHS Internship Coordinator before working from home.
Approval will be based on the discretion of the site supervisor and may not be more than 20% of the required total internship work hours. The goal of the internship is to provide students with real-world, hands-on experiences. This goal is best achieved when students are afforded direct interactions with clients, staff, and constituents at the field site. While working from home can offer an aspect of self-directed learning and professional development in areas such as time-management and accountability, it cannot effectively help students gain valuable skills such as direct communications, team work, mentoring, and collaborative learning typically engaged in while in the field.
Internship sites may require students to track work hours utilizing the organization’s time-recording system. Students must comply with organizational procedures for recording time worked, but must also complete the official ASU Internship Timesheet as a requirement of the internship programs and course.
The Internship Coordinator has the right to dock (decrease) the number of hours a student may receive work credit for (on the Internship Timesheet) if the student has violated or failed to follow a policy or requirement of the course and/or internship programs. Examples of situations where work hours may be docked include, but are not limited to:
The consequences for a student to have work hours docked will vary on a case-by-case basis based on the circumstances and severity of the situation or violation prompting the action to dock hours. However, in most cases that result in docked hours, the final course grade or assignment grade point value(s) may be negatively impacted or decreased. Students will be notified by the Internship Coordinator with instructions regarding what actions are required for the student to continue in and complete their internship, as well as the resulting consequences of having work hours docked.
Yes, you have finished the obligation to working hours when you reach your required total hours. However, it is very important that you communicate with your site supervisor your total work hours and end date. You want to end your internship on a positive note.
