DID YOU KNOW...
Our school does not receive any books or library support from SVVSD? As a charter, our book funds and supplies come out of our school budget.
The Destiny Library Catalog system and our digital library comes out of the library budget. We are very lucky to have an Administration team that supports and encourages the reading habits of our students.
The new books purchased for our shelves currently come solely from money raised through our book fairs.
Libraries purchase "library bound" books due to the high check out rates of the books. At home, you may read a book a few times. In a library setting, that same book may be checked out hundreds of times. Library bound books use special binding materials to ensure a longer shelf life. The purchase cost is higher but the life of the book lasts much longer than a typical bookstore book. They do not replace books damaged by improper care, unfortunately.
The average cost to set up an academic school library is around $50,000 for a K-8 school.
As a charter, we research, purchase, catalog and process all of our books in house. This process is usually completed by a team in the Media Services department at SVVSD and the books are shipped out "shelf ready" to the schools.
In just the first weeks of January, we have shelved over 500 titles and checked out 425 books to students.
