Addressing Race & Privilege Committee
General Purpose:
The initial goal of this committee is to form and create space for dialogue about racism and privilege. The dialogue would be a catalyst to understanding varying perspectives and experiences with the intention of educating and making a safer space for people of all races. As we create this document, it is understood that representation from the communities we are speaking of are not yet present. Further, being that all the members that came forward to volunteer their time on the committee are Edmonton based, this will have an impact on the work we are able to do as a committee and will result in some limitations. With that in mind, it will remain a living document.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Better understand and identify what racial bias looks like within the ASLIA community.
There are two major categories under this:
A) As an interpreting community, amongst colleagues- what does racism look like?
B) When we are working as interpreters in settings with people who are not white, what does racism look like in our work? How do we impact a culturally diverse environment when we are working?
2. In the long term we would like to make our interpreting community a supportive and safe place for non-white interpreters to work. How do we as individuals and as a profession create a mindful attitude toward racism/discrimination? How do we learn/show respect within culturally diverse settings?
We hope to make our professional community more racially diverse and welcome hearing and Deaf interpreters who are indigenous, black, people of color. How do we as individuals and as a profession create change?
