ASL Standards: Phonological Awareness (K/1)
Demonstrate understanding of signs and parameters (phonemes).
Kindergarten:
a. Recognize that signs are separated by parameters.b. Identify the phonological parameters in ASL.c. Count, produce, blend, and segment parameters in signs.d. Manipulate parameters to make new meaning.e. Recognize and produce rhyming signs.1st Grade:
a. Know the objectives from above - K: A to E.b. Produce phonological groupings (sign families and patterns, e.g. positions of upper face and lower face (DAD v. MOM, SUMMER v. DRY; feelings at chest area: HAPPY, ANGRY, THRILLED).Activity: Gingerbread ASL Board Game
Watch: Choose and view a "Gingerbread Man" story told in ASL.
Setup: Divide the class into small groups (2–3 students) and provide each group with a printed game board and one die.
Play: Students take turns rolling the die and moving their pieces. Upon landing on a space, the student must identify and sign the location color associated with that word.
Individual Option: This can also be used as an independent activity where students color in the spaces as they complete each task.
