It's going to be a great year,
Mrs. Starr
I am committed to fostering a love of reading and promoting literacy among our students. I would like to take a moment to share with you our approach to encouraging independent reading and how we empower students to choose books that genuinely pique their interest.
In our library, we believe in the power of independent reading. It is through independent reading that students have the opportunity to explore their own unique tastes, interests, and passions in literature. It not only enhances their reading skills but also fosters a lifelong love for reading. With this in mind, we have implemented a multifaceted approach to encourage independent reading:
Diverse Library Collection: Our library features a wide variety of books, encompassing different genres, topics, and reading levels. We continuously update our collection to ensure it reflects the diverse interests and reading abilities of our students.
Recommendations and Book Talks: I often provide book talks and recommendations to introduce students to new and exciting books. These discussions serve as a starting point for students to explore new genres and authors.
Reading Challenges: We organize reading challenges and programs to motivate students to broaden their reading horizons. These challenges encourage students to explore books they might not have considered otherwise.
Reader's Advisory: I am always available to provide personalized book suggestions based on a student's interests, reading level, and preferences. I encourage students to come and discuss their reading choices with me.
While we make every effort to guide and inspire students in their reading choices, we also strongly believe in the importance of student autonomy. The ultimate goal is for students to develop a sense of ownership over their reading selections. Here's how we empower them to do so:
Freedom of Choice: Students are encouraged to select books that genuinely interest them. We respect their choices and acknowledge that what one student enjoys may differ from another's preferences.
Reading as a Pleasure: We want students to associate reading with pleasure rather than obligation. Allowing them to pick their own books fosters a sense of enjoyment in the reading process.
Self-Discovery: As students explore different books, they are likely to discover their unique reading tastes and preferences. This self-discovery is a valuable aspect of their growth as readers.
We believe that by balancing encouragement with choice, students will develop a strong and enduring relationship with reading. It's essential that they not only learn to read but also learn to love reading. As parents and guardians, your support in nurturing their reading interests at home is also invaluable.
Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions or concerns regarding your child's reading choices or if you require book recommendations for them. Together, we can help our students become lifelong readers.
Thank you for your support and for entrusting us with your child's education and growth.
Warm regards,
Mrs. Starr
