Hope Preseason Training Camp 2019

What: A few days to spend together training before the official running season starts. My goal is to get 10-15 runners this year. If it grows more than that I will need more help from parents/volunteers with running and food prep.

Costs: Split lodging, food, and gas. If there are 10 kids, lodging is $25 total/person. I estimate about $50-60 total cost/runner. A fee waiver may be available.

Where: I have reserved the Hope Retreat Center in downtown Hope, which can sleep ~15. There are separate sleeping areas for genders. It is an old church, and it is rustic, but there is running water (Kitchen/bathroom). I own the adjacent property and cabin, so we have lots of space. This is 90 minutes south of Anchorage.

When: We have the retreat center Sunday July 28 and Monday July 29. I think we will leave Anchorage just after lunch Sunday and return just after lunch Tuesday. We have some flexibility depending on the group and drivers.

How: Carpooling (I can take five). Please let me know if you can help drive. Kids will need to help with food prep and clean up.

Why: The goals are having fun, training in different environments, fitness, camaraderie, appreciating Alaska and its trails as runners

Schedule: (Subject to change!)

Sunday Depart Anchorage 1:00, carpooling, arrive in Hope by 3:00, snack and unpack.

Hike Hope Point, running flats and down 4-6:30, dinner, explore Hope.

Monday light breakfast 8-9, run Hope coastal trail 9-10:30, lunch and rest, 10:30-12:30, Drive up Palmer Creek road and go for a hike in afternoon. Dinner to follow. Possible ultimate Frisbee at Hope school.

Tuesday Early Wagon Road run (5km) before breakfast. Eat by 9:30-10. Clean up, pack up and go, pack a snack. Stop in Girdwood (depending on group ambitions/weather) on way home and hike up Alyeska North Face trail, take tram down. Either head home or get lunch in Girdwood.

Food:

We will buy groceries for 2 dinners, 2 breakfasts, 1 lunch and 3 snacks. Runners are expected to help prepare food and clean up. Menu specifics TBA depending on group. I am thinking to keep it simple. Depending on weather we might have a campfire/s’mores at night.

What to bring:

Lots of socks, 1-2 pair running shoes, personal toiletries/medicines, sleeping bag, foam pad (there are some cots too), pillow, towel/soap, small backpack or bottle holder that you can run with, water bottle, training clothes including wind breaker or light jacket to run in, warm layer, rain coat, non-running shoes, non-training clothes, a book/electronics, some cash. Possibly a swimsuit (if it is hot we might find water), personal snacks, bear spray if you are comfortable with runner having it/already own some.

Parents:

Since this is not on a weekend, and if the group is small, I am not expecting much parent help, but if parents can/want to help below are some ways. Parents are welcome to stay in Hope also, either in the retreat center with us or on my property/cabin next door (maybe more quiet). Parents can help by getting their kids ready, helping us grocery shop in town, carpooling to/from Hope, helping with food prep and kid management in Hope, or being “slow” sweeps on some or part of our runs/hikes.
