EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY

My passion is in building robust, and arguably more beautiful, correlations between our students' varied subjects of study. I believe that the layering of artwork onto their other coursework can enliven the process and resultant understanding of difficult concepts and cultures. Classical art appreciation with an inclusion of historic timeline significance and formal analysis of prior masterworks - going beyond purely creative projects - provides the means to bring the visual arts to light as a true co-curricular.

Here is a terrific resource document from Hillsdale College regarding the classical approach to visual art education: "Core Tenets of Classical Art Education".

THE 2022 - 2023 SCHOOL YEAR

In addition to acting as our department Dean, I am delighted to continue teaching a couple classes from the past year: a Junior High art appreciation elective, a highly unique High School elective option that spans a sampling of high and low art traditions from across history and around the globe.

BIOGRAPHY

I studied both business and fine art in college, then worked my early career in marketing and brand management for IT corporations. The more recent shift into K-12 teaching came after witnessing my son's positive response to Ascent. Having this opportunity to invest in the lives of other youth has been such a blessing! In my off-hours, I enjoy painting, reading, working puzzles, playing board/card games, hunting down moose collectibles, and spending as much time as possible with my amazing family and our sweet sheepadoodle, Clover.

Some Personal Favorites

bookS

My favorite book is the Bible as it is the only one I've continued to read daily over the years with fervent interest. There's just no comparison. However, I do also enjoy reading British mystery and adventure series such as those created around Sherlock Holmes (Conan Doyle), Father Brown (Chesterton), Narnia (Lewis), Lord of the Rings (Tolkein), and Poirot/Miss Marple (Christie).

subjectS

It would be incredible to take many of the classes we offer at the school. I treasure the learning and reasearch processes and happen to find most subjects interesting. Still, history is nearest the top of my favorites list, particularly regarding the decades leading up to WWII. I value the search for new insights to understand those who came before, hoping to glean a better view on our current culture.

ascent

As a parent and teacher here, I strongly believe in our school vision and virtues. This past year, we launched our house system and I'm honored to serve as a co-leader of the Alfred the Great house, alongside Mr. Richardson. I believe that including our upper school students in this house system allows for additional community building and leadership opportunities outside the traditional classroom setting. Plus, it makes for some lively competition activities.

GAMES

Putting puzzles together is a favorite hobby and I tend to get rather obsessed with completing one once started. A couple years ago, our family was introduced to the strategy game Dominion. We have found there are almost infinite variations for play with all the available expansion packs and spend many evenings and weekends enjoying time together over a game.
