My whole project surrounded around making a fictional supervillain based on the element 'Osmium.' This was for an assignment, but since I am genuinely very interested in drawing digitally and writing stories, this was super fun for me. I wrote an essay for the backstory of my character, who I named Osme. The main point of this assignment was to learn about the elements on the periodic table through an intriguing and innovative, creative way, so you could see others' as well.
The project I am submitting is actually one of the science projects that was assigned to our class in third quarter. Basically, the assignment was to write a backstory for one of the elements on the periodic table and draw an original character inspired by it. I chose Osmium because if it's shine and luster.
I made my backstory be about how Osmium was betrayed by her old community and more admired sister, 'osmium.' I thought that this fit well since Osmium and Iridium were both found by the same chemist, and at the same exact time. I drew her outfit with hard metal growing out of her, which sounds painful, but for her it is natural because she is an element.
I found out all about the element Osmium, about it's periodic table number, it'squalities and traits, and why it us how it is. I found t his out a lot about all of the elements on the periodic table and how they are grouped through viewing other's projects as well. Now, the character I designed uses her metal that grows off of her to make weapons for revenge on the people who betrayed her when she was younger, and since Osmium is very prone to electricity, she uses lighting bolts as well. Since she is the strongest element, it is very easy to hurt her, making her such a powerful villain.
This project definitely made me more interested in the elements, and I believe I learned a lot from it. I was very proud of my results since I put a lot of work into my creative portion of the assignment. I think it is less conclusions I have drawn from this assignment, but more realizations I have made about an element that I never knew existed.
I think if I could do the assignment differently, I would not have included the element Iridium as much in my backstory, as the whole assignment is centered around of osmium, and I would have constructed her backstory just a little bit more carefully. I think that it would be super interesting to draw some other elements on the periodic table as well as supervillains, to not only learn a lot more about all of them through time and effort, but also making it collection.
I found some outfit ideas and pose references through Pinterest and LineOfAction. I found a lot of my information through trustworthy sites such as Britannica and Edu websites. I used this one reference n particular for the pose from a model and found the outfit online, and the rest I did myself completely.
Like any great supervillian, you gave a sympathetic element by artistically capturing the pain in your characters eyes along with the confidence she has in her stance. I absolutely was entralled with the color palette of dark blues and greys, punctuated by the lightning strikes. Can't wait to see her fighting She-Hulk!
