Course overview
In Advanced Higher Modern Studies we cover three main topics: Political Ideology, Political Structures & Social Science Research Methods and Issues.
You will develop your essay writing skills whilst learning about UK, Scottish and worldwide politics. You will also develop source handling skills through evaluation of research data and analysis of research methods.
Political Ideology
Pupils study a range of political ideologies, including Liberalism, Conservatism, Socialism, Nationalism and populism.
They analyse the contemporary relevance of ideology to political parties, including Liberalism, Conservatism, Socialism, Nationalism and Populism
Pupils also study the influence of ideology on contemporary political issues
Political Structures
Pupils study constitutions and political systems including parliamentary, presidential & authoritarian systems and federal, unitary and devolved systems of government.
They also study relationships between branches of government including the legislative, executive and judiciary.
Pupils study the relationships between levels of government including federal and state, devolved and central government, national and supranational institutions.
Social Science Research Methods and Issues
Pupils conduct critical evaluation of research methods, including consideration of: the suitability of the method(s), specified scenarios, ethical issues, alternative methods and/or approaches.
They also carry out critical evaluation of sources of information, focused on: reliability and validity of source evidence, knowledge of conducting social science research,reference to relevant additional research or sources and alternative approaches which enhance trust

Research Methods and Issues - Consolidate advantages and disadvantages of research methods. Cover specific examples of research.
Dissertation - chapter 3, conclusion and evaluation of research methods due to be completed this term.
