The Career Education Standard is a document that recognises the journeys children and young people make as they learn about the world of work from the early years to the senior phase. It sets out what children and young people will learn and what parents/carers, teachers/ practitioners, employers and Skills Development Scotland will do to support their learning. Implementation of the standard will improve the quality and consistency of learning about work and careers. It will improve young people’s ability to make informed decisions about future pathways.
An important part of developing the young workforce for the future is the focus on 'Skills for learning, life and work' - www.education.gov.scot/Documents/btc4.pdf
Along with our Cluster Primary schools we have developed a skills language which is embedded in the learning & teaching at Inverurie Academy. We want our students to be able to:
articulate when they are using these skills in lessons and around the school
to have learning conversations that help them to build profiles on their skills development and how they can improve
understand what these skills look like in life beyond school
use skills to help make course choices at important transition times in the Academy
recognise that skills are an important part of their achievements
We have many ways in which we develop skills for learning, life and work at Inverurie Academy. As well as it being an important part of our learning & teaching, we also have a skills framework and are also developing a skills profile which will help students in S1 & S2 to track their skills and plan how to improve them. Additionally, it will also play an important role when S2 students are making course choices for S3.
For P7 students we make skills an important part of the P7 Transition experience and in S1, our S6 students lead skills mentoring sessions with our S1 students throughout the year.
