Managing Finance and Statistics
Interpret a situation involving finance including loans, banking, currencies, pay, overtime, National Insurance, Income Tax benefits and allowances. Use mathematical processes/calculations, Explain a solution in relation to the context. Interpret , represent and compare data including, bar graphs, line graphs, pie charts, stem/leaf diagrams, scattergraphs, mean and range.
Geometry and Measures
Gradient, Area and Perimeter of 2D shapes, Volume of a prism. Pythagoras’ theorem, Tolerance, Container packing, Time Intervals, Use a formula, Scale drawing, Scale Factor.
Numeracy
Select appropriate numerical notation and units. Carry out calculations including adding and subtracting integers, multiplying, dividing, rounding, percentages, fractions, decimals, rate, distance given speed and time, time intervals, volume, area, perimeter, ratio and proportion. Interpret and make decisions based the results of a calculation.
Extract and interpret data from, bar graphs, pie charts, tables, scatter graphs, line graphs, stem/leaf diagrams, maps and plans. Make decisions based on the interpretation of data and probability.
Successful students can progress to Personal Finance including Numeracy Level 5.
Class teaching/Paired work/Group work.
Use of technologies such as Smartboard, Graphic calculators and TI-Inspire calculators enhance learning.
Investigative/problem solving approaches provide the opportunity for pupils to observe, explore, experiment and debate mathematical approaches to solve real-life problems.
Internally assessed unit tests for each of the three areas of study
Internally assessed Added Value Unit.
The Added Value Unit is a test in two parts.
A 20 minute non-calculator paper and a 40 minute calculator paper.
Throughout the course there are opportunities to develop the following skills:
Applying knowledge – the ability to use existing information to solve a problem.
Analysing and Evaluating – the ability to identify and weigh up features of a situation and come to a conclusion.
Numeracy – the ability to select and apply number processes, money, time and measurement and information handling skills.
In addition there are opportunities for pupils to develop their literacy and employability skills.
