In S3 this course is optional
S3 SQA (Games) PE is an additional 100 minutes of PE where you will study through a range of games-based activities, designed to enhance your performance and to build your knowledge of Physical Education. You will continue to explore your SLP skills whilst also learning the underpinning knowledge for National 5 PE and experience a taste of our other S4 courses: Sport & Fitness, and Mental Health & Wellbeing.
Games-based activities may include Rugby, Hockey, Football, Volleyball and Swimming, amongst others.
The course is constructed of 4 key units:
- Performance Development: how to identify an athlete's strengths and weaknesses; how to create and implement a training programme to develop performance; and how to monitor the effectiveness of this training programme.
- Factors Impacting on Performance: how Physical, Mental, Emotional and Social factors may impact on an athlete's performance.
- Mental Health & Wellbeing: aspects of Mental Heath and coping strategies - this is linked to approaches athlete's use to maximise performance level.
- Sports Leadership: planning and delivering components of sports sessions to individuals and small groups.
*Note: the learning content is the same as 'SQA PE (Games)' - it is just taught through different activities.
From S3 SQA, in S4 you may want to undertake National 4/5 PE; NPA Sport & Fitness and/or NPA Mental Health & Wellbeing.
S3 SQA PE is primarily delivered through sports, accompanied by written records of work.
We aim to give those that select S3 SQA PE an opportunity to taste all of our S4 offerings, as opposed to just National 4/5 PE.
There is no assessment in S3 Core PE. Participation and work ethic is monitored throughout.
Homework will be based on class work. It will be used to aid the retention of knowledge and to direct pupils towards areas of further study in preparation for the Senior Phase. As with core PE, pupils must ensure they are prepared for class with a full change of PE kit, water for hydration and a jacket etc. for outdoors.
