This course is optional
Exercise and Fitness leadership would be an excellent progression for any pupils looking to pursue further study in health and fitness i.e. sport and exercise science, health and fitness or coaching. Additionally, this course will give candidates an insight into a career in the fitness industry i.e. personal trainer, exercise instructor, strength and conditioning coach.
The course consists of 5 units and pupils must complete 3 of their choice to gain the full award. These are Cardiovascular training, Free weights training, Circuit training, Fixed weight training and Exercise to music. (Please note fixed weight and exercise to music choice may depend on staffing and access to Deveron Centre gym).
Higher PE would be beneficial, as would N5 English and a science. Sport and Recreation would be useful in preparing candidates with skills required to plan and lead exercise activities. Those with a particular interest in fitness may enjoy this course.
This course is also suitable for those looking to undertake a career or further study in sport and leisure.
Course will be delivered through practical and theory. Units in circuit training, cardiovascular training and free weights will be largely practical based but pupils will need to understand the underpinning science behind these training methods in advance. Therefore, they will be able to apply this knowledge to a practical setting which will involve creating and delivering fitness programmes to peers and staff. Pupils will also need to be strong communicators and able to build rapport with clients to be successful in this course.
No final exam; assessment will be continual throughout the year. Pupils will be assessed through scenario based learning using case studies and observation of their practical delivery.
Moreover, pupils will be assessed through written and oral examination within school across the year. Pupils must pass 3 modules to gain the full award as aforementioned.
See Mrs Pennycook and/or Mr Allan if you are considering Exercise & Fitness Leadership 2025/26.
