This course is optional
Higher PE builds on the knowledge from National 5 PE. Students must have an understanding of the physical, mental, social and emotional factors that impact on performance, and the performance development process.
Higher PE will be taught the learning content through their experiences in training programmes in a selection of sports such as Football, Swimming, Softball, Badminton etc. Pupils will also have the opportunity to practice in preparation for their One-Off Performances. The knowledge gained from training programmes in these activities will be used to answer questions for the written assessments. In preparation for the final exam, pupils will learn to articulate their knowledge coherently.
National 5 PE A-C is essential and anyone looking to crash Higher, you must speak to Mrs Pennycook. N5 in English or an English-based subject is beneficial.
This course is recommended for students who may wish to pursue a career in the health and fitness industries, sport and exercise science or sport coaching at university/college or those looking to teaching Physical Education as a career option.
The aim is for most of the learning to take place in the practical setting, although this will be underpinned by classroom sessions to consolidate learning. Pupils will be accountable for their own development and take responsibility of their own personal development plans. Pupils will develop their language and communication skills in articulating their knowledge and understanding in preparation for the final exam.
Higher PE is assessed as follows:
- 2.5 Hour Exam (50%) - externally assessed by the SQA.
- One-Off Performance 1 (25%) - internally assessed by Banff Academy PE Teachers.
- One-Off Performance 2 (25%) - internally assessed by Banff Academy PE Teachers.
Candidates will be awarded a grade: A; B; C; D; or No Award.
Regular homework will be given. Pupils should refer to Teams for guidance. Pupils must also ensure they are prepared for class with a full change of PE kit every session. See Mrs Pennycook and/or Mr Smith if you are considering Higher PE for 2025/26.
