There are three mandatory Units in Geography
Physical Environments - Pupils will look at glaciation & coasts in the UK, developing map skills as they go. They will also develop a basic knowledge of weather in the UK.
Human Environments - Pupils will develop knowledge of contrasts in development; world population distribution and change; and issues in changing urban and rural landscapes. Included in this section is an emphasis on research and some fieldwork.
Global Issues - Pupils will look at two global issues in some detail. The choice is between: climate change and sustainability; the impact of world climates; environmental hazards; trade and globalisation; and health.
Depending on their level of study, pupils can progress through the National Levels or move on to Higher courses.
A wide range of teaching methods will be used. These include the use of DVDs, powerpoints, living graphs, group work, textbooks, booklets and fieldwork (either in the local area or elsewhere across Scotland). Pupils will be expected to develop skills and be able to work both individually and collaboratively.
National 3
Pupils must pass all the units which are assessed internally on a pass or fail basis.
There is no external/final examination at level 3.
National 4
Pupils must pass all of the required units, including the Added Value Unit. All will be assessed internally on a pass or fail basis.
There is no external/final examination at level 3.
National 5
Pupils will have an internal assessment on each unit. These will be assessed on a pass or fail basis.
The course external assessment will provide the basis for grading attainment from A – D. This includes an Assignment and an exam.
The National 4 and 5 Courses include an Added Value Unit. Learners will choose an issue for personal study drawn from one of the course contexts. Pupils will research their chosen issue and present their findings. National 4 levels will be internally marked and National 5 Level will be externally marked.
Regular homework will be integral to the course.
What skills do pupils get from National level Geography?
Geography is an excellent subject if young people are interested in both sciences and social sciences where skills relevant in both curricular areas are brought together in real-life, applicable examples for life and work.
Types of skills include: enquiry, statistical analysis, evaluating, data and graphical representation, map skills, decision making, & reaching informed conclusions.
Developing a greater awareness and knowledge of wider global issues relevant in the 21st C for our young people where they are able to make informed decision and choices (of these).
