The SQA Scottish Studies Award at Levels 4,5 and 6 gives learners the chance to explore Scotland’s history, culture, languages and environment while developing valuable research, analytic and communication skills.
The award is flexible, drawing on units from subjects like History, Geography, Literature, Scots and Modern Studies, allowing students to follow their interests and connect learning across the curriculum. It encourages learners to understand Scotland’s identity, heritage and communities, while gaining a recognised qualification that supports future study, college pathways and careers in areas such as education, heritage, tourism and the creative industries.
Students can progress through the levels with Scottish Studies, or can move on to similar subjects such as Scots Language at levels 4-6, or travel and tourism, which also has a unit on Scotland. UHI and other Universities and Colleges have a range of relevant courses.
Students learn through a mix of direct, online and project learning. Resources include booklets, online resources and if we are able, out of class experiences.
The course is continually assessed and involves open book assessments of three separate units of work (the physical Geography of the Cairngorms, Scots Language, Scottish History and Scottish Society) and one Scotland in Focus project on a topic of our choice.
A pass in Higher Scottish Studies is rewarded with 24 SCQF points – a very handy qualification.
The Scottish Studies Award is worth 18 SCQF points (a Higher has 24) and is a useful qualification involving a variety of Humanities subjects linked to Scotland.
