Performing skills (50%) Pupils are expected to play 2 instruments at Grade 3 level and build a performance programme of 8 minutes on both instruments collectively. Pupils are also expected to regularly self reflect on their progress and performing skills.
Composing skills (15%) Pupils are expected to compose a piece of music that will be sent away to the SQA. The style of their composition can be chosen by the pupil and should display a good range and depth of musical understanding. A detailed programme note is also expected and will count as art of the pupils overall grade’
Understanding Music (Listening) (35%) Through listening, learners will develop knowledge and understanding of a variety of level-specific music concepts and music literacy. They will identify and recognise specific music styles and concepts, music signs and symbols used in music notation.
Topics include: Instrumental Music, Western Classical Music, Vocal Music, Scottish Music, 20/21st century music, World Music.
Added Value Unit Select and perform contrasting pieces of music for two instruments or voice and one instrument.
Successful students can progress from National 4 to National 5 and continue on to study Higher Music.
2 x Listening Periods.
2 x Practical Periods.
1 x Composition Period.
National 3/4 pupils are not assessed externally. Practical and listening work is assessed internally by class teachers.
N5 EXTERNAL ASSESSMENT
Students perform on both instruments for their Performance exam, marked by a visiting examiner and worth 50%. A minimum of 2 minutes is required on both instruments. The understanding of concepts and musical literacy developed through the course is assessed in a question paper worth 35% and their externally examined Composition is worth 15%
