This course is optional
The course encourages experimentation of art and design materials in an imaginative and creative way by applying practical skills in response to Expressive and Design activities. It offers opportunities to learners to develop knowledge and understanding of art and design practice, social and cultural influences on the work of artists and designers and to use this to inspire their own creative approaches. Throughout the course, reflecting on their own work and the work of others will develop critical thinking skills and problem solving skills.
Three units have to be completed:
National 4
1. Expressive unit including contextual studies.
2. Design unit including contextual studies
3. Added Value unit
National 5
1. Expressive Unit and Portfolio with contextual studies
2. Design Unit and Portfolio with contextual studies
3. There is an additional written Art and Design critical exam.
Successful students can progress from National 4 to National 5 and continue on to study Higher Art & Design.
Art and Design is a practical course, experimental in nature focussing on creativity. Students will produce a piece of Expressive art in response to a theme or stimuli and a Design piece in response to a design brief.
Unit assessments are completed in school to meet SQA course requirements and are subject to quality assurance by the SQA. Each student will produce through practical activities one piece of expressive and one piece of design work. The practical activity will assess learner’s skills in selecting, developing, producing and evaluating their work.
N5 EXTERNAL ASSESSMENT
After successfully passing both Expressive and Design units the final portfolios are assessed externally by the SQA. The folios are worth 80% of the final mark available and the remaining 20% is for the written exam. This written exam is a question paper lasting 1 hour 30 minutes.
