This course is optional
The course encourages experimentation of art and design materials in an imaginative and creative way by applying practical skills in response to Expressive and Design activities. It offers opportunities to learners to develop knowledge and understanding of art and design practice, social and cultural influences on the work of artists and designers and to use this to inspire their own creative approaches. Throughout the course, reflecting on their own work and the work of others will develop critical thinking skills and problem solving skills.
Expressive Activity: Pupils investigate a personally selected theme through analytical drawing, investigative drawing and photography from a variety of sources. Different media handling skills are then used to develop imaginative ideas. A final single artwork is produced in two or three-dimensional form which communicates the candidate’s ideas effectively.
Design Activity: Pupils identify a Design problem within a selected context. They then consider a range of design issues including functional, visual aesthetic, tactile, social and economic issues. Having considered these they research and develop a range of possible solutions, using skills of flexible thought and action. They select and produce a solution which, they then evaluate in terms of the process followed and its effectiveness.
Critical Activity: Pupils undertake two studies, one linked to Expressive Activity and one to Design Activity. At least one study must deal with a contemporary context, use of application. Through this pupils develop their knowledge and understanding and appreciation of the visual arts and designs. This enables them to form and communicate informed personal views, opinions and judgements.
Successful students can progress to study Advanced Higher Art & Design.
Art and Design is a practical course, experimental in nature focussing on creativity. Students will produce a piece of Expressive art in response to a theme or stimuli and a Design piece in response to a design brief.
Unit assessments are completed in school to meet SQA course requirements and are subject to quality assurance by the SQA. Each student will produce, in practical activities, one piece of expressive and one piece of design work. The practical activity will assess learner’s skills in selecting, developing, producing and evaluating their work.
After successfully passing both Expressive and Design units the final portfolios are assessed externally by the SQA. The folios are worth about 77% of the final mark available and the remaining 23% is for the written exam. The written examination is a 2 hour question paper.
