This course is optional
Communication and Literature 1 is a challenging course that will allow students to progress with English, without the pressure of a final exam.
Whilst Higher English concentrates on the literary aspects of the language, the combination of the Literature 1 and Communication units offer alternative language skills. Literature 1 aims to help you enjoy novels, plays and poetry; while Communication offers practical skills in reading, writing, listening and presentation that are transferable into both study and commercial situations.
Assessments are all done internally and there is no final exam.
The combination of these two units is accepted by many institutions as an alternative to Higher English pass (grade C) for access to HND or degree level programmes. The expected standard, in terms of performance and assessment, takes this into account.
This course is an excellent choice for those who obtain a C grade at National 5 English and plan Higher English in S6. It would also be a good choice for those who would like to progress with English, but aren’t quite ready for the rigors of the Higher exam.
You can go on to do Higher English in S6 after you have passed L6 Communication and Literature.
There are five internally marked assessments which are graded pass/fail:
Reading
Writing
Talking
Listening
Unseen Textual Analysis
Assessments are all done internally and there is no final exam.
